Next was the first BUCS event of the year in the form of the fleet racing. We sent 4 boats in the for of George Yeoman and Georgie Akin-Smith in the Firefly fleet, Ben Crompton and Tom Altmann in an RS200 and Doug Conway in a Phantom in the handicap fleet and Ed Bates and Jamie Bridgefoot in the Laser 2s.

With a very high standard of sailing all fleets and the shifty gusty conditions of Queen Mary SC the racing was very hard for all competitors. This was shown especially in the handicap fleet where the top places were all taken by RS200s mostly sailed by current or ex Olympic development squad or national champions. After some issues (forgetting spinni pole and a trapeze harness) Ed and Jamie struggled to put a series together but finished on a massive high with a top ten and their best result of the week end. They finished 12th overall!

In the handicap fleet the top 3 were all separated by 4 points. Unfortunately none of these were Newcastle boats. Doug finished in a very creditable 7th in a fleet that was dominated by RS200s. Ben and Tom finished on a high with their best result of the week end and finished 17th overall.

George and Georgie brought home Newcastle’s first gold medal of the campaign winning the firefly fleet with a solid last days results of 1,1,2 which led to them winning by 3 points from Tim Saxton of Exeter after a tough battle that lasted all week end.

The first event was the Leeds Halloween Howler which involved a minibus full of fun for the freshers initiation! This was followed by an epic night in fruity which set us up nicely for the racing on saturday. The first team, while winning all their races on saturday, found themselves starting behind alot of the time but made up for it with some solid boat speed and good boat handling to finish top of their group at the end of the day with only Nottingham 1sts to race. The 2nds also had a solid day winning all of their races apart from against Durham Ladies. This left them as 2nd in their group at the end of day 1. After a big night out dressed as witches we arrived at the sailing club to find gale force winds and after leeds race committee tried to get in some races the decision was made after lunch to cancel the rest of racing. This left the 1sts in first on count back of number of points with the seconds in a very creditable 5th!

Newcastle suffered slightly from hangovers on Saturday that definitely hindered performance. Two early losses out of five in the early stages of the round robins in the leagues led to us being positioned in the Silver Fleet at lunch time on Saturday.

Fortunately Newcastle found their form and went on to win every race for the rest of the day. After a night in Dogma dressed as Where’s Wally Sunday morning saw the continuation of the Gold, Silver, Bronze League and Newcastle sustained their race domination to win the Silver Fleet without having lost a race.

Quarter Finals were run on Sunday afternoon incorporating the top four teams from the Gold Fleet, top three from the Silver and top team from the Bronze fleet. This allowed Newcastle another chance to reach the finals, racing Warwick 1st team. After winning the one-race quarter final Newcastle were against Bristol in the semi finals, sailed as best of three.

The three races were not needed as Newcastle won the first two, positioning them in the finals against West Kirby Youth Team. West Kirby took the first race convincingly but Newcastle fought back to win race two. Race three was extremely close with the event open to being taken at every mark. Unfortunately West Kirby sailed through to win the race and the event.

Newcastle therefore finished second out of the 18 teams racing and first University team. This is a fantastic result that shows the benefits of a season’s hard training and commitment and the advantages of the new fireflies we are now able to train in. We are now looking very positively towards the BUSA Team Racing Finals 15th-17th April.

Its the start of a brand new year and since most of us have doubtlessly forgotten most of what we learnt last year we may as well forget those worries and go sailing. So, welcome to all the freshers this year and welcome back to all of those familiar faces from previous ones. We hope to see you about both on the water and in the toon! We’ve got a load of stuff planned for the first few weeks of term so get involved!

What’s on!

Three-Legged-Pubcrawl

Team Racing Trials!

Swim test

Fresher’s Barbecue:

During Fresher’s week the sailing club organises a barbecue at South Shield’s Sailing Club to let you scope out the place and meet some new friends. This is your chance to come and eat some free food on the Tynemouth and perhaps have a few beverages whilst learning a bit more about what it is we do and who we are as a club. Meet outside the union on Sat, 27 Sep, at 10:30

Three-Legged-Pubcrawl:

That most infamous of events - the Three-Legged-Pubcrawl - is back. Join us and a new friend as we tour the pubs, clubs and bars of Newcastle. You’ll just have to make sure your partner doesn’t pick and fights with an drunk local whilst you’re still attached! Wed, 1 Oct, 20:00 – Thu, 2 Oct, 00:00

Team Racing Trials:

If you’ve got a bit of competitive spirit in you come along to our team racing trials - where we pick Newcastle Uni’s finest to compete in our team racing squads. For all returning members the trials are Wed, 1st Oct, 12:00 – 17:00

For all new members the racing trials are Sat, 4 Oct, 10:00 – 16:30 or Wed, 8th Oct, 12:00 – 17:00 if you miss the first ones.

NB - If you plan to come to the trials please first contact the captain, Emma Norris by email; emma.norris { a t } ncl.ac.uk

Swim Test:

Union policy and our insurance requires each member of the club to be able to swim to a reasonable degree of proficiency. We don’t need to know if you’re the next Michael Phelps but it’d be nice to know you won’t sink to the bottom of the Tyne (and trust us - you really don’t want to know what is on the bottom of the Tyne). Wednesday the 1st Oct, 15.30 -17.00 at City Pool.

If you didn’t make it to the swim test take this form to any local pool and ask the lifeguard to evaluate you:
