Jules and Cat and Ian will be in the Mens Bar (on the left in the Union) on Wednesday (8th) between 12 till 2pm, to book your place please come and find them with your cheque book / cash!

Largs trip

Hey Everyone,

We will be running the first largs yachting trip, this semester, on the 17th to the 19th October, please find attached the poster advertising the event and with details about the trip.

The cost of the trip is £65 per person, and that includes the cost of the bus and the yacht hire, If you are in need of kit such as waterproofs, these can be hired at an additional cost (please ask for further info),

We will be leaving on the bus to head for largs on the Friday afternoon after lectures, and returning on the Sunday evening, with the plan to sail to tarbert on Saturday morning and then return during Sunday.

There is a limit at only 40 places available for this trip, and its first come first serve, so get your name down ASAP to be sure for a place.

Please may I also remind anyone interested that to come on the trip they must be a signed up member of the sailing club before leaving on the Friday night.

Please feel free to join the facebook group NUSYC First Largs Yachting Trip 2008!

Cheers

NUSC in 2008/09!

Its the start of a brand new year and since most of us have doubtlessly forgotten most of what we learnt last year we may as well forget those worries and go sailing. So, welcome to all the freshers this year and welcome back to all of those familiar faces from previous ones. We hope to see you about both on the water and in the toon! We’ve got a load of stuff planned for the first few weeks of term so get involved!

What’s on!

  • Fresher’s Barbecue
  • Three-Legged-Pubcrawl
  • Team Racing Trials!
  • Swim test

Fresher’s Barbecue:

During Fresher’s week the sailing club organises a barbecue at South Shield’s Sailing Club to let you scope out the place and meet some new friends. This is your chance to come and eat some free food on the Tynemouth and perhaps have a few beverages whilst learning a bit more about what it is we do and who we are as a club. Meet outside the union on Sat, 27 Sep, at 10:30

Three-Legged-Pubcrawl:

That most infamous of events - the Three-Legged-Pubcrawl - is back. Join us and a new friend as we tour the pubs, clubs and bars of Newcastle. You’ll just have to make sure your partner doesn’t pick and fights with an drunk local whilst you’re still attached! Wed, 1 Oct, 20:00 – Thu, 2 Oct, 00:00

Team Racing Trials:

If you’ve got a bit of competitive spirit in you come along to our team racing trials - where we pick Newcastle Uni’s finest to compete in our team racing squads. For all returning members the trials are Wed, 1st Oct, 12:00 – 17:00

For all new members the racing trials are Sat, 4 Oct, 10:00 – 16:30 or Wed, 8th Oct, 12:00 – 17:00 if you miss the first ones.

NB - If you plan to come to the trials please first contact the captain, Emma Norris by email; emma.norris { a t } ncl.ac.uk

Swim Test:

Union policy and our insurance requires each member of the club to be able to swim to a reasonable degree of proficiency. We don’t need to know if you’re the next Michael Phelps but it’d be nice to know you won’t sink to the bottom of the Tyne (and trust us - you really don’t want to know what is on the bottom of the Tyne). Wednesday the 1st Oct, 15.30 -17.00 at City Pool.

If you didn’t make it to the swim test take this form to any local pool and ask the lifeguard to evaluate you:

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to you all. Hopefully this year will see continued success in both the dinghy and yachting teams. I also hope to see more sailors down for Sunday sailing in 2008.

Firstly though, we are trying to sort out some club kit. Namely jackets, rugby shirts, hoodies and polo shirts. If you would like to get any of our team kit, email me at commodore@nusyc.co.uk

We will be running at full speed once exams are out of the way, with our usual Tuesday pub gatherings, team training, and some social sailing on Sundays. Goodluck to all with exams.

Last weekend sailing before Christmas

This weekend sees the last for the sailing club before we break up for the Christmas holiday. We therefore hope to see lots of members down at South Shields. Tuesday at the Box will happen as normal, and I expect to see people continuing out after for the last of 2007.

We will, of course, be resuming normal service in the new year, giving members a good way to clear the cobwebs during the exam season.
