London 6 pack and Sheffield Shuffle

This weekend saw the firsts and seconds heading their separate ways to London and Sheffield respectively.  This was not to be the 1sts finest hour as some untimely capsizes and some more than sceptical umpire decisions they found themselves in the silver fleet and struggled against a Royal Thames team that finished Newcastle’s run to the quarters. The 2s however were in much better form and luck as they found there way through the round robin at a very competitive Sheffield event.  However they did not progress any further than the quarters as they were knocked out by Southampton.

BUCS Fleet Racing

Next was the first BUCS event of the year in the form of the fleet racing.  We sent 4 boats in the for of George Yeoman and Georgie Akin-Smith in the Firefly fleet, Ben Crompton and Tom Altmann in an RS200 and Doug Conway in a Phantom in the handicap fleet and Ed Bates and Jamie Bridgefoot in the Laser 2s.

With a very high standard of sailing all fleets and the shifty gusty conditions of Queen Mary SC the racing was very hard for all competitors.  This was shown especially in the handicap fleet where the top places were all taken by RS200s mostly sailed by current or ex Olympic development squad or national champions. After some issues (forgetting spinni pole and a trapeze harness) Ed and Jamie struggled to put a series together but finished on a massive high with a top ten and their best result of the week end. They finished 12th overall!

In the handicap fleet the top 3 were all separated by 4 points. Unfortunately none of these were Newcastle boats.  Doug finished in a very creditable 7th in a fleet that was dominated by RS200s.  Ben and Tom finished on a high with their best result of the week end and finished 17th overall.

George and Georgie brought home Newcastle’s first gold medal of the campaign winning the firefly fleet with a solid last days results of 1,1,2 which led to them winning by 3 points from Tim Saxton of Exeter after a tough battle that lasted all week end.

Leeds Halloween Howler

The first event was the Leeds Halloween Howler which involved a minibus full of fun for the freshers initiation!  This was followed by an epic night in fruity which set us up nicely for the racing on saturday.  The first team, while winning all their races on saturday, found themselves starting behind alot of the time but made up for it with some solid boat speed and good boat handling to finish top of their group at the end of the day with only Nottingham 1sts to race.  The 2nds also had a solid day winning all of their races apart from against Durham Ladies.  This left them as 2nd in their group at the end of day 1.  After a big night out dressed as witches we arrived at the sailing club to find gale force winds and after leeds race committee tried to get in some races the decision was made after lunch to cancel the rest of racing.  This left the 1sts in first on count back of number of points with the seconds in a very creditable 5th!
